'A Beautiful Mind' (2001)

'A Beautiful Mind' is a movie released in 2001 depicting the life of John Forbes Nash, who is a Nobel Laureate in Economics.  Directed by Ron Howard and written by Akiva Goldsman, the film won four Academy Awards (including Best Picture) and grossed more than $300M worldwide. It stars Russell Crowe as Professor Nash.

Brilliant in mathematics but suffering from paranoid schizophrenia, John achieved a string of academic achievements at Princeton University and at MIT despite the fact that he was going through a series of delusional episodes along the way. The delusions were so great at times that they hampered Nash in his social and professional activities.

John married a former student, Alicia Larde, who subsequently became more and more exposed to John's hallucinations erratic behavior. At one point, John became so paranoid that he thought he was being chased by Soviet kidnappers. He also have imaginary friends who, of course, never grow old like him.

Alicia realized that her husband desperately needs psychiatric help, which she sought for him repeatedly. Unfortunately, the anti-psychotic medication that he was taking affected his intellectual capacity and his marital relationship with his wife.  Soon he secretly stopped taking his medication, causing him to have delusions once more. Alicia knew that the situation has worsened when John almost drowned their baby while he was bathing him, claiming that a friend (again, imaginary) was watching their baby.

Amidst the dilemma of whether or not John should take anti-psychotic drugs, the couple decided to accept John's condition and to live life coping with it, proving once more Alicia's love for John. Although his imaginary friends never left him, John was soon able to hurdle his difficulties and earned the privilege to teach again, subsequently winning a Nobel prize in economics.
