'Kill Bill' Vol. 1 (2003)

'Kill Bill', a movie released in 2003, is actually the first of two volumes, the second of which was released in early 2004 as Kill Bill 2. Kill Bill is the fourth movie directed by writer-director Quentin Tarantino. Presented in Tarantino's usual non-linear style, the movie is a gory, action-packed drama of revenge with elements of Hong Kong and Japanese martial arts.

The plot of the movie consists of nothing more than the quest for revenge of the character referred to as 'The Bride', played by Uma Thurman.  The Bride is the sole survivor of a violent massacre at her wedding in an El Paso chapel.  During the massacre, Bill, played by David Carradine, shoots her in the side of her head even before she could tell him that she's pregnant with his baby.

Because of the massacre, the Bride has had to stay in the hospital in coma for four years.  When she awakens, she escapes from the hospital and plans an elaborate revenge against her attackers - the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad. Ironically, she used to be a member of this squad.

Figure 1.  This is one of our favorite scenes in the movie, where the bride slices off the top of O-Ren's skull.  This scene was spoofed by ToyHollywood.com in this video.

She quickly disposes of viper Vernita Green in the latter's home, in the presence of Vernita's 4-year-old daughter.  She then shifts her focus on O-Ren, another deadly viper responsible for the chapel massacre. O-ren's personal history is also interesting - she witnessed her parents' murder in the hands of a Yakuza lord, whom she later killed herself.  She eventually becomes a top-notch assassin and rose to the top of the Yakuza.

One of the film's highlights is the encounter between the Bride and O-Ren and her men.  Needless to say, the Bride had to obliterate the entire army of O-Ren (known as the Crazy 88) before she could get to O-Ren.  Armed with the best sword ever built by Hattori Hanzo, a renowned smith of samurai swords, the Bride was soon able to slice off the top of the skull of O-Ren, completing her revenge on O-Ren.

Consensus: Kill Bill is nothing more than a highly stylized revenge flick. But what style!
