'Love Story' (1970)

'Love Story' is a romantic drama movie released in 1970 that is based on a novel written by Erich Segal.  Directed by Arthur Hiller, it is the story of the short-lived romance between Oliver Barrett IV (played by Ryan O'neal) and Jennifer Cavelleri (played by Ali Macgraw).

Oliver and Jennifer are worlds apart - Oliver comes from a very wealthy family while Jennifer comes from a working-class one. Oliver has never been close to his over-achieving father, and knows that his father will not approve of Jennifer. Indeed, when the two get married after graduation from college, Oliver's father severs his ties with the couple.

Oliver doesn't care about being disinherited as long as Jennifer is with him - he simply does his best to pay his way through Harvard Law School.  The couple struggles at first, but when Oliver finishes third in his class he immediately gets a good position at a law firm in New York.

Figure 1.  Oliver and Jennifer has had many romantic scenes like this in the movie.  This scene was reenacted by ToyHollywood.com in this video.

Now they can afford a better home and more luxuries, so they decide to have a baby already.  Months passed but Jennifer hasn't conceived. They consult a specialist when it seems that they were not going to have a baby.  That's when Oliver finds out that Jennifer is terminally ill.

It took some time before he gets the courage to tell Jennifer about her condition, but eventually they are both able to accept the situation. Soon Oliver finds himself swallowing his pride and borrowing money from his estranged father for Jennifer's medical needs.

His father discovers Jennifer's condition and rushes to the hospital to see how he can help.  But it was too late - Jennifer has died. Oliver's father apologizes to him, and his response shows that he still loves his father, uttering the same words that Jennifer once said to him: "Love means never having to say you're sorry."
